The Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation (ILSC) is proud to reflect on a remarkable year filled with impactful achievements, partnerships, and milestones that have strengthened the economic, cultural, and social outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across Australia.

2024 has been a year of growth and transformation as we continue delivering on our mission of returning and managing Country. From significant divestment ceremonies and groundbreaking new projects to advancing our National Indigenous Land and Sea Strategy (NILSS), we have forged new paths in supporting Traditional Owners and Indigenous communities.

Here are some key highlights and milestones from this incredible year:

  • Project progress and growth – 2024 saw us deliver 7 new acquisition projects and 27 new management projects across Australia, helping Traditional Owners achieve their aspirations for Country.
  • Land and water successes – we successfully acquired 5 properties and granted 6 properties back to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporations, providing communities with access to land and water for cultural and economic development.
  • NILSS implementation – the continued delivery of the NILSS 2023-28 has been pivotal. Regional Indigenous Land and Sea Strategies (RILSS) were developed with extensive community consultation to provide tailored, region-specific roadmaps for achieving local goals.
  • Community partnerships – strengthening partnerships with Indigenous organisations has been at the heart of our success.

ILSC Group Chief Executive Officer, Joe Morrison, acknowledged the collective effort behind these achievements.

“This year has been overwhelmingly positive at the ILSC. The results we celebrate today reflect the unwavering dedication of our team and partners, as well as the strength and resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across the country,” said Mr Morrison.

“Through innovative projects and collaborative partnerships, we are fulfilling our role in addressing the historic dispossession of Indigenous people by restoring access and management of Country. Together, we are building a brighter future.”

Looking ahead to 2025, the ILSC remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting Indigenous aspirations and expanding opportunities for land and water management, cultural preservation, and economic empowerment.

2025 will be the 30th anniversary of the ILSC since its establishment in 1995.
