What we do

What is the ILSC?

The Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation (ILSC) was established in 1995 and operates under the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Act 2005 (ATSI Act).

We assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to acquire and manage Country – including land, saltwater and freshwater – so they can achieve economic, environmental, social and cultural benefits.

We work toward four long-term outcomes where Indigenous peoples are:

  • growing the value and productivity of Country
  • owning and managing their Country sustainably
  • driving and influencing policy and opportunity for Country
  • preserving and protecting culture through reconnection with Country.

Our primary vehicle for achieving these outcomes is Our Country Our Future, our national funding program, which operates across urban, regional and remote Australia.

We also provide direct assistance, broker partnerships, and build sector capacity to support First Nations peoples to access, use and care for Country on their own terms, and we deliver the externally funded Real Jobs Program and Savanna Fire Management Program.

Our activities are guided by the National Indigenous Land and Sea Strategy which is developed in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities across Australia.

We are funded through annual payments from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Land and Sea Future Fund. This perpetual funding base enables us to invest in First Nations peoples and Country for generations to come.

The ILSC is also a Corporate Commonwealth Entity under the Public Governance, Performance and Accountability Act 2013.

Acknowledgement of Country

In all of the ILSC’s activities we pay our respect to the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the lands, waters and skies on which we live and work. We honour the resilience and continuing connection to Country, culture, and community of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across Australia. We recognise the decisions we make today will impact the lives of generations to come.
